Hello! My name is Nathan Motzko and I am currently going to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for Illustration and Graphic Design.
My work is inspired by the dense arrangements and emotion I hear in instrumental hip-hop samples and ambient music. My paintings and drawings evolve from the specific noises and drum hits I hear, and guide them to a newly formed idea. For example, the works of Shlohmo, Soosh, and Repeat Pattern each compose a collection of meaningful scratches and nicks arranged over samples of nature and piano keys. I try to capture this sound's energy by translating my understanding of these sounds into a form of my own mark making. The result is illustrations of fragmented parts- contorted bodies clashing with abstract gestures and signs emphasizing movement and emergent structures.
