In commemoration of this year’s 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, I chose to feature Ida B. Wells-Barnett to honor all of her work as a civil rights activist, educator, journalist, and suffragist. Although it would be decades before all women were able to vote, Wells-Barnett helped pave the way as a key leader at the forefront of the women’s rights movement. This anniversary is also special to me, as my mother is a history professor and author specializing in the women’s suffrage movement.
