An interior book illustration for The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James. This image depicts the story’s isolated governess haunted by the shame of her predecessor, and the pressures of Victorian culture. Using themes from the Victorian language of flowers, white roses for a naive crush contrast marigolds for death and mourning.
